In-form Van Gerwen claims first Euro title27/10/2014 ESPN staff
Michael van Gerwen made it three tournament wins in three weekends with victory in Germany.
Michael van Gerwen left his opponent Terry Jenkins for dead with a 11-4 victory in the final of the European Championship on Sunday night.
The World No.1's stellar month continues as he followed up recent triumphs in the World Grand Prix and Players Championship with a convincing win in Mulheim, Germany.
That makes it three titles in three weekends for the Dutchman, who cruised past Justin Pipe and Brendan Dolan to reach Sunday's final stages. He hit top gear with a 10-5 quarter-final win over Dave Chisnall, before defeating countryman Raymond van Barneveld in the last-four.
Jenkins had hardly finished his warm-up throws before Van Gerwen had raced into a five-leg lead. The Briton then picked out two 180s to hit back and win the next three legs, but Van Gerwen hit a maximum of his own in the ninth leg to trigger a run of five legs without reply to move 10-3 up.
Van Gerwen missed a dart for the title as Jenkins capitalised to keep the final alive, but the 25-year-old landed two 10s in the 15th leg before hitting tops to claim his first European Championship title.
Earlier, Van Gerwen hit his fourth televised nine-darter to see off semi-final opponent Van Barneveld.
Van Gerwen had been down 4-2 before he kick started his comeback in the seventh leg with a 177 and 180, before taking out 144 on double 12 to complete the feat.
It was his second perfect leg on stage against van Barneveld - the first coming in the 2006 Masters of Darts - and adds to his other major nine-darters in the 2012 World Matchplay and 2013 World Championship.
Jenkins earned his spot in the final by overcoming Mervyn King 11-8, but he proved no match for Van Gerwen, who sealed the £55,000 top prize in devastating style.
